Pharr Mayor & RGVMPO Chair Dr. Ambrosio Hernandez Receives TxDOT’s Prestigious “Road Hand Award”

Pharr, Texas – At this year’s Texas Transportation E-Forum held on Monday, February 8, 2021, the Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas Good Roads/Transportation Association announced that Pharr Mayor and Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (RGVMPO) Chair Dr. Ambrosio Hernandez has been awarded the prestigious 2020 “Road Hand Award,” one of three recipients statewide to receive this year’s notable recognition.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the Road Hand Award is a joint effort between the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas Good Roads/Transportation Association to recognize those special individuals who have freely given their time, energy, support, and vision toward accomplishing important transportation programs or projects in their communities, their region or the entire state.

“Mayor Hernandez continues to be a tireless advocate for the City of Pharr and the entire Rio Grande Valley,” said the organization in a congratulatory video announcing Hernandez as this year’s award recipient. Hernandez’s efforts contributed immensely to the merging of the former Hidalgo County and Cameron County MPOs, making the Rio Grande Valley MPO the fifth-largest in the state. Hernandez has also been instrumental in securing over $300 million in funding for the expansion of the I-69/I-2 Interchange in Pharr, along with millions of dollars in other transportation projects in Pharr and across the Rio Grande Valley.

“I am humbled and honored to be named this year’s recipient of the Road Hand Award,” remarked Hernandez. “There are so many transportation leaders who are working statewide to improve road conditions, safety, and transportation infrastructure to meet the needs of our growing state, and it is truly a team effort,” he continued. “By working together with our leaders on the local, regional, and state levels, developing regional projects that will benefit our entire area as a whole, and then advocating for the need and importance of such projects, we give a voice to our communities and are able to get things done,” he added.

“I am committed to continue being an advocate for the improvement of transportation and infrastructure projects for Pharr, for the Rio Grande Valley, and for our state,” Hernandez ended.

Congratulations to Mayor Hernandez!
