The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is the first WWTP in South Texas to have a Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) system.   The BNR is critical in removing phosphorus and nitrates from the influent sewer.  Phosphorus and nitrates from the Wastewater Treatment Plants across the Rio Grande Valley were contributing to the depletion of oxygen in the Arroyo Colorado.  Pharr was first in recognizing the need and reacted by adding the BNR to the existing WWTP. Pharr was recognized though the Arroyo Colorado Watershed Partnership where they received the Texas Environmental Excellence Award from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). The WWTP is an 8 million gallons per day plant.
