City Proclaims September 17th as “National Voter Registration Day”

The Pharr City Commission approved a proclamation declaring September 17, 2024, as “National Voter Registration Day,” a day dedicated to promoting civic unity and encouraging voter participation. This nonpartisan civic holiday aims to educate Americans about the voter registration process, election reminders, mail-in ballots, and early voting options. Since its inception, more than 5 million people across all 50 states have registered to vote on this day, including 1.5 million in 2020. The proclamation also highlights the importance of civic education for students in PSJA ISD, ensuring that young people understand the voting process and develop a sense of civic responsibility. Mr. Rey Perez, a teacher at PSJA ISD, along with student representatives from the student council and other organizations, and Dr. Alejandro Elias, Superintendent of Schools for PSJA ISD, were present to accept the proclamation.”Thank you for having us here today,” said Dr. Elias. “This proclamation means a lot to PSJA ISD as we continue to educate our students about the importance of voting. It’s crucial for everyone to learn at a young age that their voice counts,” he added. By participating in National Voter Registration Day, the City of Pharr emphasizes the shared rights and responsibilities of democracy, urging everyone to engage in the electoral process.

The proclamation highlights how the attacks, which struck at the heart of American institutions and values, unified the country in an unprecedented display of resilience and resolve. By observing this day, PSJA ISD students are encouraged to reflect on this pivotal moment in history, recognizing its profound impact on our nation’s identity and the importance of upholding the principles of freedom and unity. Pharr, Texas – The City of Pharr proudly hosted the Deep South Texas State of Water Symposium, an essential gathering organized by Chairman and State Representative Terry Canales, with support from Finance Vice-Chairman Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, and the Texas Water Foundation. This pivotal event brought together key leaders and experts from across the region and state to address the pressing water issues facing the Rio Grande Valley.

Water management has become a critical concern, impacting the region’s economy, public health, and future growth. This symposium served as a platform for stakeholders to discuss water conservation strategies and sustainable initiatives, ensuring a resilient future for the Valley.

“Water is a fluid subject, no pun intended, it moves quickly and it’s moving quickly and we’re running out of it quickly and so it’s important to have all these people at the table when we’re looking for long-term solutions for the future,” said Chairman Canales.

Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. expressed gratitude to Chairman Canales for spearheading this effort, emphasizing the importance of collaborating on solutions ahead of the upcoming legislative session.

“We are deeply grateful to Chairman Canales for organizing this crucial symposium,” said Mayor Hernandez. “These discussions are vital to safeguarding the future of our region’s water resources,” he added.

The event featured panels, Q&As, and updates from agencies and municipalities. The City of Pharr is grateful to all participants and attendees for working together to discuss viable water solutions for the future.

Key attendees included Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz, and Senator Morgan LaMantia, who provided insights on state and federal initiatives.

The City of Pharr remains committed to working alongside these leaders to secure the region’s water future for generations to come.
