Pharr City Report for 10/7/2024

Pharr City Report for 10/7/2024

The Board of Commissioners of the City of Pharr met for a regular meeting on Monday, October 7, 2024, and considered an agenda that included the following highlights:

Pharr Proclaims October 6-12, 2024 as “Fire Prevention Week”

The Pharr City Commission has proclaimed October 6-12, 2024, as “Fire Prevention Week,” emphasizing the importance of fire safety, particularly in homes where fire poses significant risks. In 2022, over 2,700 individuals lost their lives, and fire departments responded to 360,000 home fires across the U.S. The proclamation highlights the critical role of working smoke alarms, which can halve the risk of fire-related deaths by providing early warnings. Pharr residents are encouraged to install and regularly test smoke alarms, create fire escape plans, and remain vigilant, with first responders dedicated to fire prevention and education efforts. This year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You,” underlines the necessity of functional smoke alarms for safety. Pharr Fire Chief Pilar Rodriguez and members of the Pharr Fire Department including “Sparky” the Fire Dog accepted the proclamation. Chief Rodriguez urged residents to ensure they have fire alarms installed in all bedrooms and common spaces to detect fires and prevent serious injuries.

City Declares October 7th as “World Teacher’s Day”

The Pharr City Commission has proclaimed October 7, 2024, as “World Teacher’s Day,” recognizing the vital role teachers play in shaping the city’s future through high-quality education. The proclamation emphasizes that teacher quality is a key factor in student success, highlighting the dedication, resilience, and innovation that educators bring to their profession and communities. The community is encouraged to show support for teachers by displaying light blue ribbons outside homes and businesses during the week of October 5. This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to celebrating and supporting its educators for their essential contributions to students’ growth and success. Ana González, Executive Director of Teach For America Rio Grande Valley, and members of her team accepted the proclamation. “We are proud to highlight the amazing work teachers do in our community every day to educate our students and transform lives,” said Gonzalez. “Thank you to the City of Pharr for recognizing this important work and always supporting our teachers,” she added.

Pharr City Commission Appoints Members to Pharr Memorial Library Board

The Pharr City Commission has approved a resolution to appoint/reappoint two members and one ex-officio member to the Pharr Memorial Library Board. Diana Cuevas and Delia Soza were appointed as new members. These appointments ensure continued leadership and support for the library’s mission to serve the community. The appointed individuals will help guide the library’s development and services, contributing to its role as an educational and cultural resource for the city.

Join us in commemorating this milestone as city officials, alongside produce growers, importers, distributors, consumers, and dignitaries from both sides of the border, gather to celebrate the Pharr International Bridge’s continued leadership in trade, agriculture, and commerce.

As the third-ranked port in Texas for trade with Mexico and the seventh-largest and fastest-growing land port of entry nationwide, the Pharr International Bridge is at the heart of North American trade and agriculture. Handling over 65% of the nation’s fresh produce imports from Mexico and driving more than $47 billion in annual trade, the Pharr Bridge plays a crucial role in boosting the economy at the local, state, and national levels.

The start of the produce season marks one of the busiest and most impactful times of the year, highlighting the bridge’s key role in connecting nations and sustaining the flow of fresh goods that benefit millions.
