History
Pharr, Texas was founded in 1909 by John C. Kelly and named after Henry Newton Pharr, a Louisiana sugarcane grower. Originally inhabited by Native Americans and later part of the Spanish and Mexican territories, Pharr became a key agricultural hub in the early 20th century due to irrigation from the Rio Grande and the arrival of the railroad. In 1911, Kelly formed the Pharr Townsite Company, platting down the town he named Pharr to honor his partner. The town of Pharr later incorporated in 1916, and by 1949 had adopted a home-rule charter and commission government.
